What is Effective Teaching for the Common Core State Standards?
The Common Core State Standards chart a bold and compelling vision for moving beyond the rhetoric of college and career readiness to making certain students actually are ready. The Common Core suggests shifts in teaching practices that will help students master them. At the same time, schools and districts across the country are trying to figure out how to better align their instructional frameworks with the Standards. The Insight Core Framework does just that.
The Insight Core Framework...
• Uses the language and logic of the Common Core
• Focuses on classroom instruction that promotes mastery of the Common Core
• Helps observers focus on the instructional practices that will improve student outcomes and teacher practice with the Standards
• Was created from the ground-up by teachers and school leaders with deep knowledge of the Common Core and instruction

Framework White Paper
Our whitepaper, “Effective Teaching for the Common Core State Standards,” describes the development of the Insight Core Framework and how it will be used to support teachers and leaders to implement the Common Core Standards. In it, we discuss several “Big Ideas” inherent in the Common Core and how they indicate specific “Core Practices” teachers can use to help students achieve the Standards.
Research Base
The Framework is based on several years of on-the-ground work developing and implementing instructional frameworks and standards-based instruction in districts throughout the country. We paired this experience with a thorough analysis of the Standards, professional teaching standards and the related research about effective teaching, labor market trends, and college and career readiness.
Researchers Wanted
Insight is currently seeking research partners to study the Framework. We are interested in working with educators (especially those that work with students with disabilities and English Language Learners) and school leaders at all grade levels to pilot the Framework and provide feedback. We’re also interested in working with researchers that have experience in conducting large-scale, quantitative analyses.

Core Tools
We know what it takes to implement instructional frameworks in complex school systems where competing priorities and limited resources are the norm. We strive for flawless implementation through a process that aligns the Framework with other district priorities, engage stakeholders, and train educators how to use it.
The reliability of data collected through classroom observations is hugely important. Insight’s Observer Certification increases the reliability of observer ratings. The Gates Foundation’s Measures of Teacher Effectiveness Project featured one our partner district’s success with our observer certification process. We can help you customize and implement an on-going observer certification process.
